Voice

Do our voices really count regardless of what side of a proposition/culture we stand on?

My voice counts
If it says almost what you want to hear:
That your initiatives have been
Significantly successful;
That you are what you think you are –
If indeed that is what you think you are;
That things, this place are better because
You are here. My voice counts
Until it does not.

My voice counts
If I fit fairly well within your expectations;
If I fit neatly enough into a role
In the narrative of your success;
If I fit into your perspective
Of what brilliance or strength is.
My voice counts
If I sit non-disruptively within your sentiments
About racial superiority or
Ethnic superiority or civil liberties
Or gender liberties or sexuality or faith
Or work-life balance; about what is fair
And unfair. My voice counts
Until it does not.

My voice counts
If I have the mechanics to make it count:
The vision backed by the will
Backed by the violence.
It does not matter, the loftiness
Or lack thereof of my vision.
It does not matter either, the truth or lack thereof
On which I stand. My voice counts
Until it does not.

A man once wrote,
“We hold these truths to be self-evident,
That all men are created equal.”
And a pig once spoke,
“All animals are created equal, but some
Are more equal than others.”
One man’s self-evident truth is another’s
Idealistic garbage. My voice counts
Until it does not.
